The distinctive feature of the urban underground constructions is that they often have to be constructed closely or beneath the high density of buildings, commercial and financial center, as well as sensitive historical structures. As a consequence, the prediction and consideration of constraints and potential conflicts must be carefully implemented in the planning phase. Afterward, the risk control and management during construction phase is the most important. Especially in the soft soil condition, this topic is even much more important and needs special attention of all related parties. The urban tunnel and underground construction in Vietnam are booming recently. In Ho Chi Minh City, there about 60km of subways, many underground parking lots and electricity telecommunication cable underground system have been being deployed. Da Nang City intended to build a 2.5ha underground parking lot and other underground traffic systems. Hanoi has about 35km of underground railways and tunnels in the early stages of construction. Practically, the risk management in urban underground constructions is unfortunately not highly considered in Vietnam. For a typical example, since late 2010, there have been 139 road sections that have collapsed since the first “hole of death” occurred on Ho Chi Minh City streets due to the less attention of the management. In this context, it is ESSENTIAL to help authorities, building organizations and civil engineers in Vietnam to be aware of the latest technical methods and effective risk management processes for urban underground constructions. The workshop “New Method of Risk Management for Urban Underground Construction” provided an opportunity for Vietnamese scientists and constructors in the construction sector in general and in the geotechnical engineering sector in particularly to learn experiences from international colleagues and also to discuss in how to effective risk management systems in the near future. On the other hand, international experts can also study Vietnamese attempts in developing standards of urban underground construction technologies.
